The Relationship between the Physical Classroom Environment and the Academic Functioning of School Age Males and Females
Hand, Kimberley
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
This doctoral project reviews literature regarding the positive relationship between elementary school classroom environments and the impact on student achievement. School administrators and designers have become aware that factors such as visual clutter, lighting, and crowding in elementary school classrooms can have an impact on student's learning (Baker & Bernstein 2012). Class-size reduction programs have been implemented, with results indicating positive impacts on students' achievement with class-sizes below 20 students. School psychologists can utilize data to design and develop classroom environmental interventions. Furthermore, school psychologists can assist by designing and implementing a school-wide classroom evaluation form to be included in yearly teacher evaluations. This doctoral project will provide a literature review and classroom evaluation form regarding classroom design. Keywords: classroom, design, achievement, impact, behavior, interventions.
