Educating Clergy Online: A Pedagogical Map to Guide and Assess Spiritual Integration
Wiens, Tammy Lynne
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary
The disciplines of theological education, spiritual formation, and online learning are brought into conversation with one another in this qualitative study addressing whether and how online seminary courses attend to students' spiritual development. Primary data was collected through a series of interviews with faculty experienced in both face-to-face and online theological education. Through their own intuition and innovation, these faculty represent some of the first models for collaborative learning and interactive, online teaching practices equipping students spiritually and intellectually for the practice of ministry. The conclusion of the study is that not only is it possible to nurture spiritual formation in an online learning community, but it is possible to bring such learning immediately to bear on the practice of ministry. The research findings are not limited to the design of online courses, but have application for instruction across all theological education. The culmination of the project is a pedagogical map to guide and assess learning goals linked to students' spiritual integration.
