Learning and teaching practices within higher education have changed surprisingly little over the last 20 years. Other sectors, such as banking, music and publishing, have been turned upside down by digital technology, but the UK's research and education sector has yet to fully exploit the potential of new technologies. Pockets of innovation are found in almost every institution, but few have fundamentally changed how they teach. University leaders are becoming more aware of the transformational potential of technology. This report highlights where higher education institutions in the UK, and beyond, are investing and seeing the greatest returns. It provides a primer on new evidence from across the sector and around the world to map some of the most innovative uses of technology and sets out the key opportunities for higher education institutions. Additionally it explores where experience of using digital technologies to re-engineer face-to-face teaching may have wider implications for the whole sector. The paper concludes with seven recommendations on how the UK can build upon its existing investments to increase its competitive advantage.
