Istartsmart: An Evaluative Study on a College Success Course
Kruse, Heather L.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Arizona University
The researcher for this evaluative study investigated the efficacy and impact of the iStartSmart college success course by examining the first-term retention, fall-to-fall persistence, and three-year completion rates of community college students who enrolled in the one- or three-credit course at a community college in Arizona and the rates of students who did not successfully complete or did not enroll in the course. The researcher further examined descriptive variables including age, gender, ethnicity, enrollment in the one- or three-credit version of the course, part- or full-time enrollment status, and placement status of college-ready or developmental (students who tested into one or more below 100 level courses[s]). Descriptive statistics, analysis of covariance, Pearson chi-square, and logistic regression were used to compare groups and for examining the relationships between variables. Findings from this study revealed the odds of persistence for completers of the one-credit course are 176% higher than the odds for non-completers. For completers of the three-credit course, the odds increase to 263%. Additionally, the odds of award completion within three years are 82% higher for three-credit completers than the odds for non-completers. Finally, findings from this study determined there were statistically significant relationships between successful completion of the course and retention, persistence, and completion of a certificate or degree.
