Consumerization of Information Technology: An Exploratory Qualitative Inquiry of Michigan Community Colleges
Skallos, Maryly K.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
With funding cuts, reduced enrollments, and meeting a presidential initiative, Michigan community colleges need to find ways in which they can continue to provide quality education at an affordable price. Consumerization of information technology (IT) has been proposed to meet the technological needs of the community college. There is little research on the consumerization of IT within higher education. This study of how Michigan community colleges embraced consumerization of IT sought to bridge the gap in the literature. The purpose of this research was to explore what community college decision makers are doing to embrace the use of consumer devices on their campuses from an IT perspective. A semi structured interview was designed to capture the experiences of senior administrators, CIOs, and technical directors as they described what and how they decided the various processes needed to be successful. The responses and supporting evidence were gathered and analyzed with in NVivo 10 qualitative analysis program. The findings of this study revealed infrastructure, security, and compliance requirements have been met while end user training for security was lacking, help desk support was on an as-needed basis, and mobile app development was either a dream, handled by a third party, or supported by website services.
