The Impact of a Curriculum Audit on Student Achievement
Minor, Cheryl B.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Walden University
Lead educational agencies (LEDs), school administrators, and teachers do not appear to grasp the influence of curriculum audits on students' academic performance relative to the level of recommendations that are implemented. Failure to comply fully with audit recommendations can have negative implications on a district's financial status and operations. The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative study was to investigate the level to which recommendations of a curriculum audit had been implemented and the relationship between perceived implementation and student academic achievement tests. The theoretical framework for this study was the effective schools research on curriculum management and student achievement. Administrators' and teachers' perceptions were collected with a researcher-designed survey. In addition, English Language Arts assessment scores were collected of 2,025 students previously enrolled in Grades 3 through 5 from the 2007 to 2010 school years. The results of the ANOVA of the Likert scale survey questions indicated a significant difference existed between the perceptions of 12 administrators and 63 teachers of the level of audit recommendation implementations. The data indicate that the perception of personnel on the level of implemented recommendations over the subsequent years of 2007-2010 reflect that a relationship may exist with the analyzed students' growth in achievement test scores. Recommendations from this study include supporting school reform to improve student achievement by using curriculum audits and ascertaining the perceptions of personnel on its impact. Hence, identifying the progressive efforts of improving curriculum management practices can have positive social implications in the compliance with mandates of performance as indicated by curriculum audit change recommendations.
