Quantifying Quality of Childcare: Supporting Latino Childcare Providers through Adult Education and Early Childhood Education Training
Clark, Daniella Linet
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Washington State University
This study presents results from a program evaluation that examined the increase in quality of childcare provided by Latino/a study participants who received professional development in early childhood education and basic education skills. Participants were enrolled in either an elementary education certificate component of the program or a high school certificate component of the program. All components of the program were taught in Spanish. All participants were Latino/a family childcare providers in a community with a large Latino population in the Western United States. The data collected and analyzed during the program evaluation results included quantitative data from two observational rating scales, the FCCERS-R and Arnett rating scale, and qualitative interview data from six study participants. Results are not meant to be generalized across Latino/a family childcare provider populations as they are specific to the individuals that participated in the program. Statistically significant increases in quality of care were measured on all subscales of the FCCERS-R rating scale after program participation. However, the Arnett rating scale did not show statistically significant changes to quality of care after program participation. Results of the qualitative data analysis indicated improvements in quality of care. Recommendations for the replication of like programs in other areas with large numbers of Latino/a family childcare providers, preferably administered through community college systems, is recommended.
