The Relationship of Stress and the Physical Wellness of Illinois Superintendents
Simonson, Curtis R.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Western Illinois University
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship of stress and the physical wellness of Illinois superintendents. Studies have shown that stress has one of the most debilitating impacts on an individual's health and job performance. This study focused on the stress levels, factors influencing the superintendency, and superintendents' physical wellness. The researcher analyzed the stress levels reported by superintendents and the relationship of stress upon their lives. The study provided statistics that illustrated demographics, stress levels, factors causing stress, potential health issues, and ways in which superintendents managed stress. From the demographics a picture of stress faced by Illinois superintendents' emerged by school district size, location, and type. Stress levels were depicted by factors superintendents faced, and the impact of stress on health was portrayed. Finally, suggestions for controlling stress were presented. The researcher obtained data through the Simonson Stress Survey for Superintendents. Subjects completed an online survey using SurveyMonkey. The sections of the survey included: demographics, health history, factors causing stress and ways to manage stress. The knowledge gained from this survey resulted in a better understanding of the factors impacting the superintendency and the role of the superintendent and methods by which stress can be managed.
