Delport, John
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Washington
This study used a mixed methods design to examine the characteristics--including competencies (i.e., knowledge and skills), and personal attributes--of successful teachers of students with E/BD. The characteristics were examined through the perceptions of teachers of students with E/BD (teachers who are expert in E/BD, n = 14, MEd Graduates specializing in E/BD, n = 44), and experts in the field of E/BD (Experts in E/BD, n = 4), as well as comparing them with the literature. All of the participants completed a survey in addition the experts in E/BD and expert teachers were interviewed and participated in focus groups. All participants rated the surveys competency categories as important, and confirmed those in the literature. Several additional knowledge and skills emerged or those in the survey were further explored, and two new competency categories emerging. Personal attributes were found to be important. Two themes emerged within the personal attributes, cognitive and affective attributes. Several specific attributes emerged within the cognitive and affective attributes respectively. Future research should continue to explore how the characteristics of successful teachers of students with E/BD can be integrated into preparation programs and professional development.
