Community College Presidents in a Southern State: An Exploratory Qualitative Inquiry of Servant Leadership
Lehning, John
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This exploratory qualitative inquiry added to a limited body of research on the topic of community college presidents who practice the servant leadership philosophy, their influence on organizational effectiveness, and their influence on creating benefits for their community. The research question directing this study asked, What are the practices, experiences, organizational effects, obstacles, and benefits of the servant leadership practice of community college presidents in a southern state? An exploratory qualitative inquiry was used to document the lived experiences of 15 community college presidents in a southern state who practice servant leadership philosophy, their effectiveness, their ability to overcome the obstacles to servant leadership practice, and the benefits. The qualitative replies acquired through this suggested that the professed organizational obstacles that inhibited servant leadership practice are the unfamiliarity of servant leadership philosophy, self-awareness, overcoming the organizational culture, and the influence of external barriers. The recommendation is that future researchers investigate other community college presidents who perceive to practice servant leadership in other regions by gender, age, and state.
