Re-Conceptualizing Student Study Teams within a Response to Intervention Framework: A Web-Based Guide for Educators
Holleran, Stephanie Elise

Student Study Teams (SSTs), a type of collaborative pre-referral team comprised of multidisciplinary members, are used to exhaust all potential interventions within the general education setting and resolve a student's academic or behavior issue prior to suggesting and/or initiating a referral for special education assessment. Current literature reflects the need for effective and systematic SST training protocols due to increasing referrals for psycho-educational assessment. This project proposed the development of a web-based guide to facilitate a more effective SST process by utilizing a problem-solving approach to foster a continuum of support between regular and special education. The intent of this project was to increase staff understanding about the purpose of SSTs, and advocate the SST framework as a vehicle for student placement into appropriate evidence-based interventions within a Response to Intervention (RtI) protocol. The web-based guide was reviewed by nine experts who provided feedback regarding the website's content, usefulness, and effectiveness. Revisions were made to the website based on expert feedback and then presented to 51 certificated and non-certificated participants for evaluation. Using a 5-point Likert scale, the majority of questions were rated in the Agree (4) to Strongly Agree (5) range, indicating that experts and participants found the website effective, useful, comprehensive, and a needed resource. Future research may wish to focus on implementing SST guides district-wide, including yearly reviews or trainings, by using this web-based resource.
