In an information-saturated world, today's college students desire to be engaged both in and out of their college classrooms. This mixed-methods study sought to explore how replacing traditional teaching methods with engaged learning activities affects millennial college student attitudes and perceptions about learning. The sub-questions focused on how millennial college students describe their learning needs, how they view different teaching methods, what they perceive as effective learning, and what their predominant learning style preferences are. Focus groups, questionnaires, interviews, and a learning style inventory were used to explore the learning needs of millennial college students. This study focused on engaged learning methods versus traditional teaching methods. The results reveal that students prefer to be engaged and that they find the lecture method to be mostly disengaging. The students desire real-world, hands-on experiences to help them better understand their overall life experiences and to apply their learning to the world outside of the classroom. The learning styles inventory revealed that students prefer to learn in a variety of ways, but the predominant learning preference is the audio-visual-kinesthetic style. A person who prefers this learning style thrives on engaged, hands-on learning experiences. Overall, after taking a course with engaged learning activities, students have more positive attitudes about engaged learning methods and more negative attitudes towards traditional teaching methods, especially the lecture method.
