The Effects of Online Homework on High School Algebra Students

Technology is changing the way students are able to learn and access mathematics. This study explored the effects that technology can have on 9th grade Integrated Algebra students through computer-assisted instruction. In hopes of raising students' New York State Regents scores, ninety-five high school freshmen from a Title I school in New York took part in amplifying their Integrated Algebra instruction through online homework. A Pre and Post-Regents Examinations were given to measure their academic improvement, while a questionnaire and interview were used to evaluate students' attitudes towards the use of the technology. The students' overall average score jumped 6% from a 53% to a 59%. This difference was significantly greater than zero (t = 4.69, df = 94, p < 0.05). The mean increase on the three tutorial tested items was almost 5 points (M = 4.96, S.D. = 6.17, N = 95). This was significantly greater than zero, t[subscript critical] = 7.835, providing evidence, at the 1% significance level, that the online tutorials were effective in producing an increase in Integrated Algebra Regents scores. The questionnaire showed that there were no significant effects that the online homework had on the students' attitudes towards mathematics. However, the interviews found that students enjoyed doing their homework online and were more motivated to do homework on the computer. Reasons for this ranged from the help to the organization that the online platform lent the students. The student participants in the study mostly felt that the experience was beneficial and a few suggestions for improvement arose. The tools and motivation that the online homework lends high school students may help them become more successful in the mathematics classroom. This study showed that online homework could have positive effects on students. The best implementation of this technology as a medium is something that needs to be further studied and developed.
