Effects of Crew Resource Management Training on Medical Errors in a Simulated Prehospital Setting
Carhart, Elliot D.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Nova Southeastern University
This applied dissertation investigated the effect of crew resource management (CRM) training on medical errors in a simulated prehospital setting. Specific areas addressed by this program included situational awareness, decision making, task management, teamwork, and communication. This study is believed to be the first investigation of CRM training in the context of emergency medical services. This training was provided to an intervention group, whereas a control group did not receive the training. All participants then participated in a simulated prehospital medical scenario. The performance of each participant was evaluated in each of the components of CRM as well as for the occurrence of medical errors. The results were compared between the two groups in order to determine the effect of the training program. Results did not show a statistically significant difference in the number of medical errors committed by participants in either group; however, participants in the intervention group did score higher in the areas of teamwork, task management, and decision making.
