Clergy are significant providers of mental health services in the United States. The literature shows disparity between the need of clergy for mental health training and the type of brief training provided through seminar formats. It also indicates that the collaborative professional activities of clinicians and clergy may be enhanced when (1) the activity, such as mental health consultation, can be directly related to current pastoral work, and when (2) clinicians use fundamental respectful communication which is sensitive to clergy. This Psy.D. dissertation project builds on these findings, developed in the form of a curriculum resource that is a self-guided training manual intended for use by a clinician-clergy co-leadership team and adaptable for consultation across a variety of settings and time-frames. The manual explains a model of consultation developed for this project, Clergy-Sensitive Consultation (CSC), which adapts consultee-centered case consultation, placing emphasis on (a) the specific needs of clergy participants, (b) the mental health expertise and religious sensitivity of co-leaders, and (c) the collective pastoral expertise and challenges among participants. This project represents a first attempt at a model and training manual for sensitive mental health consultation with clergy, informed by the literature. The usefulness of the training manual and the CSC model, in whole or in parts, should be assessed in future research.
