Recent research on social emotional learning (SEL) curricula has shown that implementing SEL instruction within the classroom is a qualified evidenced-based intervention to help students develop fundamental skills for success in life. SEL curricula help teach students essential skills such as recognizing and managing emotions, developing caring and concern for others, establishing positive relationships, making responsible decisions, and handling challenging situations constructively and ethically (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning). Strong Teens, an SEL curriculum for students in grades 9-12, is evidence-based, however, a study has not yet been published showing its effectiveness with special education, low SES, English language learner, Hispanic, high school students. This project was developed to address the possible utilization of Strong Teens with this target population. School psychologists participated as expert reviewers and special education teachers assessed and pilot-tested Strong Teens. The results suggest that Strong Teens could serve as an effective SEL curriculum to implement within the special education classroom, with English language learners and with Hispanic students. The study group believed that implementation within their classrooms could lead to a reduction in behavioral referrals, an increase in overall student academic achievement and positive school climate. A number of additional skills and topics were identified to ensure the applicability of the curriculum to the target population. An implementation and evaluation plan, including pre and post-program measures, were created. Teams could use the plan and data collection tools developed here, as a guide to begin teaching SEL at their schools. Skills learned through Strong Teens can have many immediate and long-term positive effects on students, schools, families, the community and society.
