This study examined the networking and mentoring practices of female superintendents in California. Through a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data was collected from a survey using electronic questionnaires, and qualitative data was collected from open-ended questions on the survey and interviews. The survey response rate was 50%. Of the respondents, nine superintendents were selected and interviewed. Data from these sources, along with that from available research, were triangulated in order to find convergent and divergent themes. Key findings of female superintendents in this study included the following: (1) formal networks provided support for female superintendents, especially locally-based and county-sponsored networks; (2) informal networks included local groups who met frequently over a meal; (3) gender identity and voice were an issue for some female superintendents in formal networks; however, no respondents felt this was an issue in the informal networks; (4) networking supported the women while they were already in the position of superintendent, and the benefits included gaining information related to the role of the superintendency as well as social and emotional support; (5) mentoring provided primary support while the individual was pursuing the superintendency and through the first year in the position; (6) women were mentored by their direct supervisors, who took the initiative to intentionally mentor the individual. Findings were interpreted through the lens of social network theory and the framework of communities of practice.
