An Online Learning Community for Beginning In-Service Teachers
Taranto, Gregory A.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Robert Morris University
The purpose of this study was to design, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of incorporating an online learning community as part of a comprehensive new teacher induction program. First, the researcher created an online learning community model based on the results of a comprehensive review of literature and from the previous year's pilot study results. Next, the researcher implemented online learning community in the form of a wiki. A mixed-method approach was utilized to collect and analyze the results of the study. The study evaluated the implementation of the model through the perspectives of all the participants, which included- new teachers and contributors consisting of veteran teachers, principals, central office administration, and professors from Schools of Education. Data were collected in the form of pre and post-surveys, questionnaires, focus group sessions and discussion board entries, and revealed positive results for the new induction format. An additional advantage of the program evaluation suggested an effect that reached beyond the program's participation where participants applied newly acquired technology skills in other aspects of their positions. This "ripple effect" spanned the induction learning community to the participants' own personal learning networks. The scope of the study was limited to only one school district.
