Do Ubiquitous Laptop Initiatives Decrease the High School Dropout Rate?
Basham, Misty Dawn
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wingate University
In 2007, Mooresville Graded School District developed a strategic plan to infuse twenty-first-century learning skills into the schools by providing staff and students in grades four through twelve with a laptop computer. In late fall of 2007, Mooresville High School deployed laptops to all certified staff and to the entire student body in the 2008/09 school year. Much of the research on reducing the number of dropouts suggested that engaged students are less likely to drop out of school. The purpose of this study was to conduct quantitative research to investigate the implementation of laptop computers and their contributions in reducing the number of students who drop out of one high school in Mooresville, North Carolina. To achieve this purpose the study explored relationships among the implementation of the one-to-one laptop initiative and variables associated with student engagement including the drop out rate, attendance rate, discipline rate, and academic achievement in Algebra I and English I. Data were collected and analyzed since the initiatives' implementation in 2008 and compared to two years prior to and two years after implementation.
