School Bus Maintenance. Bulletin, 1948, No. 2
Featherston, E. Glenn
Office of Education, Federal Security Agency
This bulletin is one in the series on pupil transportation issued by the Office of Education. Its purpose is to furnish information and guidance for local school administrators and others who are concerned with school bus maintenance. Programs of school bus maintenance vary among the 48 States. Presumably all contract vehicles are maintained by private facilities. Since pupil transportation is a relatively new service, local school units are still in the first stages of developing sound programs of school bus maintenance. Most of them have not yet advanced to the point where they are able to achieve the maximum in efficiency and economy. A school administrator who is planning a maintenance program is faced with many problems related to personnel, garage facilities and equipment needed, and procedures to be followed. The best guide for finding the answers to these problems is the experience of those who have operated similar programs. It is the purpose of this bulletin to discuss factors related to school bus maintenance and to suggest procedures and standards which are recommended by persons with extensive experience in school bus maintenance. This bulletin contains the following: (1) General Aspects of the School Bus Maintenance Program; (2) Carrying on the Maintenance Program; (3) General Information on School Bus Maintenance; and (4) Recommendations on Personnel, Garage Facilities, and Garage Equipment.
