Gloucester, Massachusetts, is about 25 to 75 years behind in the school building program. In the meantime social, industrial, and educational conditions have changed greatly, and it is now a serious menace to the welfare of the children of Gloucester and its coming citizenship that modern school facilities are not provided. Moreover, the people of Gloucester probably do not realize that by failing to provide modern buildings and equipment they are asking the school authorities to accomplish an almost impossible task. There is no question but that Gloucester will want to give the best possible education to its children once it realizes the deplorable conditions which now exist in the schools--conditions which all the zeal and intelligence and progressive spirit of the teaching force can not overcome; conditions which are a menace to the health and strength of the coming citizenship of Gloucester.
