Charlotte Danielson's Theory of Teacher Evaluations: A Quantitative Study of Teachers' Perceptions on the Four Domains

This quantitative study determined teachers' perceptions on the four domains of Danielson's framework for teaching. The study surveyed teachers from five school districts regarding the components set forth in Danielson's model for evaluating teachers. The survey was created by Sweeley (2004) and her dissertation chair, Dr. Brogan. The survey instrument used a 5-point Likert Scale to measure teachers' perceptions of the sixty-six components within the four domains of Danielson's framework for teaching. In addition, the study sought to identify differences in attitudes among school level, subject area taught, gender, years of experiences, and familiarity with Danielson's framework for teaching. The findings from this study could be beneficial for schools, regions, and states as they implement this new evaluation instrument. The study used the average mean from the Likert Scale scores to determine if teachers agreed or disagreed with the components of Danielson's (1996) framework for teaching. Furthermore, to analyze the differences between the means, ANOVA, t test, and Chi-Square analyses were completed for each variable. The outcome variables, teachers' attitudes, were examined with regard to the overall reported opinions of each domain area, as well as school level, subject area taught, gender, years of experience, and familiarity with Danielson's framework for teaching. The results indicated overall agreement in the domains and some influences on respondents' opinions to the other factors. As a result, the findings in this study were similar to those of Sweeley (2004), insofar, that respondents agreed that the components within Danielson's four domains were effective in teaching and learning.
