Foreign Criticism of American Education. Bulletin, 1921, No. 8
Osburn, W. J.
Bureau of Education, Department of the Interior
From time to time, and particularly within the last few decades, a large number of educators and intelligent critics of education from other countries have visited and studied American schools, usually for the purpose of gaining such information and ideas as would be helpful to them in the improvement of the schools of their country. Many of these have made reports to their home governments containing valuable criticism of the U.S. schools from their points of view. This bulletin consists of extracts from these reports so organized and arranged as to enable the American reader to get the largest possible value from them at a minimum of time and effort. The comment on the criticism by the author of the manuscript, W.J. Osburn, gives a fair and helpful interpretation of these criticisms. The bulletin is divided into seven chapters, as follows: (1) American educational philosophy; (2) The American school system; (3) The teacher; (4) Elementary education and the kindergarten; (5) Secondary education; (6) Universities and colleges; and (7) Education as a means of control. An index and bibliography are included. (Contains 11 footnotes.) [Best copy available has been provided.]
