State Americanization: The Part of the State in the Education and Assimilation of the Immigrant. Bulletin, 1919, No. 77
Butler, Fred Clayton
Bureau of Education, Department of the Interior
There are many thousands of people who are in a position to exert great influence in the work of Americanization, through their leadership or membership in State legislatures, State bureaus and departments, and State organizations, official and voluntary. The primary purpose of this book is to lay before that body of men and women some concrete suggestions of ways by which the States may serve effectively in the education and the assimilation into full fellowship and citizenship of foreign-born people. The States are rapidly coming to see the importance of this problem and many are taking official action. The conception of the task varies greatly and some of the methods advocated in some States seem unwise to those who have long studied the question. It seems wise, in order to bring about a common understanding of the problem that this present work should be issued immediately. Contents include: (1) Great principles; (2) State legislation; (3) The State and the community; (4) State survey; and (5) Coordination of forces. (Contains 2 footnotes.)
