This report includes statistics of the various forms of institutions that have to do with the education of the Negro race in the United States. These statistics are taken from the best available information furnished by State departments of education, private high schools and academies, teacher-training institutions, and colleges, universities, and professional schools for the year 1925-26. In a few cases, as noted, where 1926 information could not be secured, the last available information is used. Much valuable information on elementary education in certain sections of the country where segregation is not practiced could not be secured, as no separate records are kept for the different races. Most of the information included in these tables is found in several other bulletins of the Bureau of Education, but it is thought to be more desirable to have this information collected into a single publication. Table 1 gives the development of Negro education from the year 1917-1918 to 1926. Table 2 shows the public-school enrollment in 18 Southern States. Table 3 shows the average daily attendance, aggregate days attended, and number of teachers in 17 States. Table 4 gives the enrollment by grades in public schools of 17 States where separate records of this kind are furnished. Table 5 gives a distribution of pupils by grades in public schools in 12 States biennially, beginning with the year 1919-1920 and ending with the year 1925-1926. Tables 6 and 7 give teachers, pupils, property, and receipts for private institutions of secondary and higher rank. Tables 8 to 10, inclusive, with reference to Figure 1, explain the present condition of public high schools, and show the number of teachers and pupils, kinds of schools, and their rapid growth during the last 20 years. Tables 11 to 15, inclusive, show conditions of teacher-training institutions. Figure 2 illustrates the enrollment in public teacher-training institutions. Tables 16 to 20, inclusive, give a list of privately controlled colleges, universities, and professional schools, with a full detail of the number of teachers and students, courses offered, property, receipts, and endowments. Tables 21 to 24, inclusive, give the students, teachers, property, receipts, and expenditures of institutions receiving financial aid from the United States Government under provisions of the various acts relating to land-grant colleges, 12 of which are also listed under public teacher-training institutions.
