The Effects of the Focused Practice Instructional Approach on 4th Grade Writing Scores
Gardner Taylor, April Dimmis
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Argosy University/Hawai'i
The Focused Practice Instructional Approach (FPIA) was based on the Environmental Mode of instruction established by George Hillocks' 1986 meta-analysis for writing instruction. The purpose of this study was to clearly define the FPIA approach using the original studies and test if it was significantly effective in fourth grade classrooms using the NAEP testing criteria. A pretest and posttest were used with a matching control and experimental group methodology. After the implementation of ten FPIA lessons, the results showed that the FPIA was significantly effective for every writing trait and holistic score as compared to the control group lessons.
