Online Learners and Their Choice of Institution
Gratz, Susan D.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lincoln Memorial University
The purpose of this case study was to identify characteristics of learners who completed their master's degrees online and to explore the reasons adult learners chose to enroll in a particular institution to complete their online master's degrees. As more postsecondary institutions explore the online environment, more research-based information is needed to assist leaders as they investigate adding online graduate degree programs. A modified Delphi study was used to guide the analysis of data gathered through a survey questionnaire. The survey questionnaire was completed by a sample population of Ed.S. learners enrolled in a small, private nonprofit Level V university in east Tennessee. The study revealed that most online learners enroll in private, for-profit institutions. The majority are White, adult females who are married. The institutional characteristics that most influenced the enrollment choice were a program format and duration that allowed learners to continue at their current jobs and maintain family routines.
