The Problem Areas of Adopted Children in Pampanga as Measured by the Mooney Problem Checklists
Bustos, Maricel T.
Online Submission
The purpose of this study was to determine the problem areas of adopted children in Pampanga, Philippines using the Mooney Problem Checklist (MPCL). The participants of this study were 40 adopted children whose ages range from 10 to 15 years of age and who reside in Pampanga, a province in the Philippines. The participants were asked to answer the MPCL that consists of 330 questions. The checklist appraises the major concerns of the respondents. The researcher ranked the problem areas based on the mean and sum of scores. Socio-psychological relation was ranked first. This indicated that the respondents encountered problems that affected their relationship with other people such as inferiority, shyness, not getting along with people, not being accepted by others, being bullied, being criticized, and not being liked or disliking other people. Ranked second is the personal-psychological relations. This indicated that the respondents have personal problems that affected their well-being such as thoughts of the past, unhappy experiences, fears, feeling of unhappiness, lacking of self-confidence, feeling of being a failure, and tendency to spend a lot of time worrying. And ranked third is the problem concerning the future. This indicated that the respondents doubted their abilities and capabilities, unsure of one's future and can't see the relevance of one's education in one's future. Thus, adopted children experience additional issues in relation to their being adopted--loss of biological parents, loss of biological connection with their adoptive parents, and loss of identity which can lead to deep-seated problems which non-adoptive children won't experience. If not handled appropriately, it can lead to the erosion of self-esteem. Given this data, it is imperative that immediate intervention should be in place to assist this group of individuals. A follow-up study should be conducted to thoroughly understand specific sentiments and needs so that appropriate intervention/psychotherapy will be implemented to assist them as they deal with their personal issues.
