Much of the literature on asthma is based on non-school data collected primarily in clinics. As asthma is given greater national attention, it is crucial to examine the educational consequences of the disease in the context of school where children spend much of their days. This study examines the educational impact of asthma on elementary and middle school children in a large Southwestern urban school district. Rating scales were completed by teachers and parents to determine the impact of asthma control, age, and gender on school attendance, academic performance, classroom attention, and level of physical participation at school. The results added unique information to existing literature. Two weak associations were found in this study. First, well-controlled asthma seems to be associated with favorable attendance. Second, well-controlled asthma seems to be associated with classroom performance. No association was found between disease control and classroom attention, or between disease control and physical participation, at least in this elementary and school sample. Because this study ascertained that asthma is related to school attendance and classroom performance, educators and health care providers may enjoy a clearer understanding of the possible challenges children with asthma face in schools. Consequently, information such as this may signal that as soon as a child is diagnosed with asthma, parents and teachers should commence monitoring and be prepared to intervene as necessary.
