Developing a Student-Centered Leadership Program at East Stroudsburg University
Robinson, John E.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Rowan University
Leadership training programs have been around since the time of Plato, although only recently have educators begun to ask questions about these programs. Leadership training programs are defined as any form of growth or development that promote, encourage, and assist the expansion of knowledge and expertise required to optimize one's leadership potential and performance. These programs have a significant base in American higher education and appear to be available at over 800 college campuses. The purpose of this action research study is to collect information on the opinions held by current student organization officers regarding the leadership development programs conducted by the Office of Student Activities at East Stroudsburg University. This information is intended to gauge their perspectives and develop future leadership programs that are more reflective of their needs and interests. This information will provide an initial basis for the development of a credit-bearing leadership course. Because I am leading this project, the study also examines my leadership. My personal leadership theory-in-use is best characterized as having components of servant leadership, constructivist leadership, and feminist leadership. The major component of my leadership theory is based on the premise that in order to lead one must first serve. The leader must listen to and communicate with his members to determine their needs and interests for being involved with the group. The leader utilizes that information in order to allow the members to develop and grow from their experience with the group. By taking the opportunity to seek feedback and involvement of members in the development of group goals and projects, members see that the leader cares for them, wants to see them succeed, and values them as vital, contributing members of the group. It is these components that drive my desire to see that the leadership programs offered by the Office of Student Activities better meet the needs and desires of the current student leaders in order to allow them to develop to their fullest potential and get the most of out their student leadership experience.
