Online Instruction: An Analysis of Instructor Perceptions of Online Formats, Instructional Design, Training, and Support
Ray, Julie A.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Robert Morris University
This mixed methods study focused on the perceptions of faculty currently instructing online. The sample was taken from the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, and consisted of a random selection of instructors teaching at least one online course in the fall of 2008. Of the 300 people surveyed via a web-based survey tool, 111 responded, constituting a 37% response rate. Findings indicate that the majority of instructors found it difficult to convert course content to the online format and although some instructors are incorporating the pedagogical tools available for online instruction, many still underutilize these tools. Another aspect of this study focused on the importance of training prior to teaching online courses. A significant difference was found in perceived preparation of instructors in both technological and pedagogical aspects of online course delivery when they received training prior to instructing online. Additionally, approximately two-thirds of the respondents indicated that they still desired additional training and the majority believed mentoring was an appropriate method to train new online instructors.
