The purpose of this study was twofold. First, this study examined the influence of African American females' level of self-esteem on the mate-selection process. Secondly, this study was concerned with the influence of the level of self-esteem of African American females on valuing the mate-selection characteristics of interpersonal skills, intellect, social status, interpersonal power and physical attractiveness. Additionally, this study investigated the influence of the following variables: age, religious affiliation, socio-economic status and level of education on the overall characteristic of mate selection as valued by African American females. The population for the investigation consisted of African American women in six different professional organizations in the Southern region of Texas. The members of the population represent several different professions including education, engineering, nursing, business, law, and medicine. It is recommended that, Counselors be cognizant of the influence that self-esteem has on the mate selection process of African American females. An understanding of this phenomenon can assist in developing and implementing counseling intervention techniques to support and treat the unique problems and relationship complexities between African American males and females.
