Principals' Perceptions of the Alternative Certification of Teacher Candidates in a Southeastern Suburban School System as Measured by Their Attitudes and Hiring Practices
Johnson, Penny Jean
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
This study confirmed the observed strengths and weaknesses of AC candidates as described by those responsible for their hiring and supervision. The findings were consistent with those found in the literature. According to school administrators making hiring decisions, AC candidates are stronger in content knowledge and weaker in pedagogy than their TC counterparts. Analysis of principals' understanding of the purpose of alternative certification revealed that those responsible for the hiring decisions were more reluctant to hire AC candidates when there was an abundance of experienced teachers to fill available positions. Instead, AC was used to open the teaching profession to those sewing in non-teaching positions and to those who had demonstrated a natural teaching ability. Additionally, the study uncovered the belief by some principals that AC candidates have not paid their dues and the perception of others that a greater risk is taken when hiring an alternative certification candidate. These attitudes are seen as the obstacles affecting the selection of AC candidates in future hiring decisions.
