The Misconceptions of Abuse by School Personnel: A Public School Perspective
Starling, Kathleen
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of school personnel's perceptions, their need to examine their sexual abuse polices procedures, provide appropriate training to allocate those policies and procedures to all stakeholders in their educational school setting. A mixed methods study was used to explore the hypothesis and research questions utilized in this study. The results of this study indicated that on average, school personnel defined sexual relationships with students as sexual abuse, even if the relationship is not physical. This study also indicated that school personnel were fairly consistent that they should report sexual abuse regardless of the situation, prevention programs should be taught by outside specialists, and they would not feel comfortable with physical contact with a student other than patting the student on the shoulder or putting their arm around a student's shoulder. Furthermore, school personnel's perceptions about reporting and preventing sexual abuse depend on gender, age, geographic location and school level. Finally, the results of this study indicated that the vast majority of teachers are aware of the definition of sexual abuse, are able to detect the signs of sexual abuse, agree or strongly agree that sexual abuse prevention programs are necessary, and agree or strongly agree that sexual abuse prevention programs should be taught by outside specialists.
