Sedere, Upali M.
Online Submission, Address given at the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) Theme Seminar (Vidya Mawatha, Colombo, Sri Lanka, Dec 7, 2010)
Equity is a major concern for all development actors. Although Sri Lanka has successfully addressed equity issues in education sector there are unresolved factors and variables those perpetuate inequity. There are emerging new equity issues those that Sri Lanka needs to address. The changing population dynamics and the huge middle class population bring new concerns. Also the emerging Digital divide is another serious issue to be addressed. The school system needs reorganization to address these issues Education being one of the most influential social determinants of health equity issues plays high importance. The distribution of schools, the increase of small schools and changing learning climate in small schools are major concerns to address. Interdependence of education and health is much known in the literature. Sri Lanka stands out amongst the developing countries for its high success in education and health sector performance and the emerging issues needs to be addressed with no delay to continue to be successful in the emerging world.
