The Relationship between Principal Transformational Leadership Practices and Teacher Retention
Lazzaro, Kristen Elaine
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Massachusetts Lowell
A transformational leader has the ability to raise the level of human conduct and the ethical considerations of an organization. In this sense, a leader who demonstrates transformational qualities will be able to increase the commitment and capacity of the individuals who work within the organization. It appears from the literature that the identification of transformational leadership qualities in principals may play a role in the retention of teachers. This study investigated if a correlation exists between principal transformational leadership practices and teacher retention. Identification of transformational leadership characteristics in high school principals that lead to transformational leadership practices was examined. This study utilized a quantitative research design via a web based survey in order to obtain data relevant to transformational principal leadership style and teacher retention. Data was gathered from faculty members in 3 Massachusetts public schools. The instrument was the Principal Leadership Questionnaire (PLQ) and identified transformational principal leadership qualities. This study found that transformational leadership qualities were identified in principals as delineated by the PLQ and overall principal transformational leadership style may influence teacher retention rates. An implication to the field of education and more specifically principal leadership is that current and aspiring principals should be cognizant of how transformational leadership practices can help retain teachers in their schools as well as be aware of research that indicates the benefits of engaging in transformational leadership practices.
