Motivations and Experiences of Expatriate Educators in South Korea
Oliver, Nicolette
Online Submission
This research is a qualitative case study of native English instructors at the Gyeonggi-do Institute for Foreign Language Education (GIFLE) in South Korea. A literature review of issues regarding expatriate educators is included. The guiding questions for this study include why these instructors chose to become educators, move to South Korea, and work at GIFLE. In addition, instructors were asked about the most positive and most difficult experiences they have faced in working at GIFLE, and about their plans for the future. To collect qualitative data, the researcher conducted interviews and a focus group with in-service teacher training instructors at GIFLE. Data analysis included an inductive process of categorizing data and interpreting the motivations and experiences of these expatriate educators in South Korea. Four appendices are included: (1) Interview Guide; (2) Informed Consent Form; (3) Demographic Graphs; and (4) Focus Group Guide. (Contains 8 graphs.)
