Learning Teams: Creating What's Next
National Commission on Teaching and America's Future
The traditional teaching career is collapsing at both ends. Beginners are being driven away by antiquated preparation practices, outdated school staffing policies, and inadequate career rewards. At the end of their careers, accomplished veterans who still have much to contribute are being separated from their schools by obsolete retirement systems. In five years, two-thirds of the teachers in America's classrooms could be gone. The National Commission on Teaching and America's Future (NCTAF) previews the challenges facing the reinvention of the U.S. educational workforce. NCTAF is planning a series of invitational leadership retreats to examine current educational human resources and systems, and to develop strategies to improve school performance and teaching effectiveness. Three graphic appendices are included: (1) Trends in Teacher Attrition; (2) Age Distribution of U.S. Public School Teachers; and (3) Percentage of Public Schools Teachers Age 50 and Older, 2008-09. (Contains 24 footnotes.)
