Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (NJ3)
Following up on the SEL program guide, "Safe and Sound: An Educational Leader's Guide to Evidence-Based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Programs," this latest tool for front-line educators provides answers to questions frequently asked by educators, such as, "Now that I have selected a good program, how do I integrate it with the rest of what goes on in my school? How do I implement and sustain it in a high-quality way? How can we measure the positive effects these efforts are having on our students, staff, and climate?" This 158-page guide synthesizes research literatures on school reform and organizational change, and summarizes the state of the science of implementation and sustainability of interventions. Special sections of the Implementation Guide include: (1) descriptions and explanations of SEL research demonstrating how providing SEL to students improves their academic performance; (2) the unique and pivotal role of the school leader; (3) six research-based factors essential to implementation success; (4) the steps and cycles of implementation SEL learning standards; (5) a self-assessment and planning rubric; and (6) case studies of schoolwide SEL implementation. The 272-page Toolkit includes 40 invaluable tools for SEL implementation. Among other helpful resources keyed to each step of the implementation process, the Toolkit includes: (1) sample mission statements; (2) staff development curricula; (3) suggested learning standards, benchmarks and assessment tools; (4) handouts to explain SEL to parents and involve them in the process; (5) implementation worksheets and checklists; and (6) parent, teacher, and student surveys for evaluation.
