Historically, writes the author, humans have experienced an impulse to write; have found the materials to write; have endured the labor of composition; have understood that writing offers new possibility and a unique agency, in spite of cultures that devalued writing, that at times prohibited writing by those who may have been female or of color, or that encouraged reading but discouraged writing. Yancey calls for support of all forms of 21st century literacies, to research and articulate new composition, and to help student writers become the writers of the future. The report discusses historical perspectives of writing and cites three challenging opportunities: (1) Developing new models of writing; (2) Designing a new curriculum supporting those models; and (3) Creating models for teaching that curriculum.
