Munoz, Marco A.; O'Daniel, Susan
Online Submission
Emerging research suggests that providing personal computers to students, in combination with a constructivist teaching approach, holds promise for significant gains in student achievement. As we begin a process of using one-on-one learning with laptop computers in a large urban district, it is important to share information concerning the design, implementation, and evaluation of this kind of technology projects. The main goal is to support student learning and to enhance the instructional delivery of the teachers. The project was implemented in two middle schools and two high schools in which laptops were provided to each student and teacher in the participating schools; professional development for school faculty supported re-engineering the teaching-and-learning process. Providing opportunities for students to learn with computers on a daily basis requires a fundamental paradigm shift in the teaching-and-learning processes. This year one evaluation provides a basis for discussion about how to design, implement, and evaluate high-quality one-to-one learning environment with laptops in school systems across the nation.
