Service-learning has the potential to be a powerful experiential education practices because it not only fosters effective learning, also prepares the next generation for democratic life. A growing body of research describes the positive impact service-learning can have on young people, helping them achieve academically; strengthen job- and career-related skills and aspirations; and increase self-efficacy, respect for diversity, self-confidence, collaborative skills, avoidance of risk behaviors, and resilience. This document highlights the history of service-learning, practice standards, scholarly journals, professional education venues, research agendas, leadership networks, national conferences, and current challenges. [Members of the W. K. Kellogg Service-Learning Consortium, joined by Earth Force and Youth Service America, worked with service-learning leaders to produce this document.]
