Rubin, Marcia A., Ed.; Wooley, Susan F., Ed.
American School Health Association (NJ3)
This resource describes how pregnancy prevention efforts can be integrated into the various components of a school health program (the linkages between classroom instruction to prevent adolescent pregnancy and the school's health and mental health services, the necessary administrative policies, the type and extent of faculty and staff development, and strategies for involving families and community members.) The document contains advice based on the experience of people who have worked in various capacities with students and staff members in schools. Specifically targeted modules are designed to help orient the various members of a school community to their role in creating a climate for positive and responsible behavior within their realm of responsibility in the school community. Individual modules are included for: (1) Administrators; (2) Community Liaisons; (3) Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Coordinators; (4) Family Liaisons; (5) Health Educators; (6) Library and Media Specialists; (7) Counselors, Social Workers, and Psychologists; (8) Nursing and Medical Professionals; (9) Physical Educators, Coaches, and Athletic Trainers; (10) Educators Who Integrate Students with Disabilities; (11) Educational Support Staff; and (12) Youth Development Staff. The format allows for selection from among the 12 individual modules and four foundational modules: (1) Partnerships to Prevent Unwanted Pregnancy, HIV, & Other Sexually Transmitted Infections; (2) Building Bridges to Common Ground; (3) About Program Evaluation; and (4) Final Words. Appendices are included.
