Trends in Higher Education. Volume 2: Faculty
Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada
This volume of "Trends" provides a historical analysis of faculty hiring over the last 30 years, with breakdowns that examine nationwide shifts in gender, age, mobility and attrition as well as within specific disciplines. Following this analysis is a discussion of the factors that will drive change in faculty renewal for the foreseeable future. These factors include demand for quality education, projected enrollment rates, international and national mobility, salary scales, the role women play in the university community, and how demographics and research and development vary within each discipline. In an effort to forecast the impact of student enrollment, quality of teaching and research and the effect they will have on faculty hiring, Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) presents three scenarios for the coming years. The first scenario predicts that student enrollment will grow by 16 percent over the next decade, matching the projection in the first scenario from the enrollment volume of "Trends." The second scenario is based largely upon the second scenario from the enrollment volume of "Trends," suggesting that student enrollment will grow at a rate of nine percent. The third scenario assumes that student-faculty ratios will return to the level that existed in 1998, paired with higher levels of enrollment, as projected in the third scenario of the enrollment volume of "Trends." In all three instances, the projections anticipate that the number of faculty retirements will increase over the next decade. (Contains 35 figures.) [For "Volume 3: Finance," see ED501770.
