Maracci, Mirko
International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, Paper presented at the 27th International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education Conference Held Jointly with the 25th PME-NA Conference (Honolulu, HI, Jul 13-18, 2003), v3 p229-236
This paper reports on the first stage of a research project still in progress aiming at identifying undergraduate students' difficulties and errors in solving linear algebra problems. Some students' difficulties related to very basic notions of vector space theory are shown and discussed with respect to both Balacheff's theory of conceptions and Fischbein's theory of tacit models. Finally a brief discussion concerning the complementarity of the two frameworks is proposed. (Contains 3 footnotes.) [For complete proceedings, see ED500858.]
