Follow the Teacher: Making a Difference for School Improvement
Hess, Robert T.
Rowman & Littlefield Education
In this book, Robert Hess promotes teacher leadership as the critical component to achieving breakthrough results in school improvement. Developed from conversations and stories of dozens of teacher leaders and administrators, this book advocates that all teachers can and should take on leadership roles in their school. It contains many stories of teacher leadership in action, staff activities to increase teacher leadership, quotes from teachers who are operating as leaders, and solutions teachers might encounter during their leadership journey. It is also a book about system design. Embedded within its pages is a blueprint for designing a system where teacher leadership flourishes. Building principals are chiefly responsible for the effective design of a system, and this book lays the groundwork for helping principals create the conditions that will generate teacher leadership throughout their schools. Readers will not only be inspired by the examples of teacher leadership throughout this book, but also understand ways that teacher leadership can be intentionally infused into a school system. This book is organized into the following chapters: (1) Introduction; (2) Every Teacher Is a Leader; (3) Culture Is Intentional; (4) Teacher Leadership Roles: School, District, and Profession; (5) From the Principal's Office: How to Support Teachers in Leadership Roles; (6) Supporting Teacher Leadership through Professional Development; (7) Leading to Learn: Creating Communities of Leaders; (8) Supporting Teacher Leadership through Innovation and Reflection; and (9) Balancing Teacher Leadership. The following are appended: (1) Teacher Leadership Scenario Responses; and (2) Teacher Leader Internet Resources.
