Eliminating Racial Profiling in School Discipline: Cultures in Conflict
Bireda, Martha R.
Rowman & Littlefield Education
Referrals, suspensions, and expulsions of African American students, especially males, are at an all-time high. However, as this book shows, culturally determined assumptions and friction over communication have a role to play in this as well. "Eliminating Racial Profiling in School Discipline" is designed to make readers aware of how cultural factors relate to the ways that discipline is meted out. Administrators and teachers will gain an understanding of how culturally conditioned beliefs and assumptions negatively influence student-teacher relationships. Ultimately, this book proposes a set of strategies to solve increased disciplinary referrals. It presents the following 10 chapters: (1) Discipline: The New Equity Issue; (2) Merely a Symptom; (3) The Impact of Culture; (4) Cross-Cultural Communication Conflicts in the Classroom; (5) Stereotyping in the Classroom; (6) Cultural Conflicts, Cultural Conditioning, and Disciplinary Practices; (7) Changing the School Climate: The Administrator's Role; (8) Changing Individual Attitudes; (9) The Village Approach: Forming Partnerships with Parents and Community; and (10) Evaluating the Process: School Climate and Individual Assessment.
