Educating our Children Together: A Sourcebook for Effective Family- School- Community Partnerships
Carter, Susanne
Consortium for Appropriate Dispute Resolution in Special Education (CADRE)
Because schools, communities, and families play interconnected roles in the crucial mission of educating children, they must find ways to work together as educational partners. Providing parents with information and resources to support their children's education is a cornerstone of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). This sourcebook is based on the belief that schools that make an investment in developing family-friendly policies and environments where educators work closely with families can go a long way toward preventing the onset and escalation of adversarial school-family relationships. The sourcebook includes guiding principles for family-school-community involvement, tips for getting started, a self-assessment tool to determine current practices, strategies, and program descriptions that have been organized according to eight interrelated strategies: (1) Creating a family-friendly school environment; (2) Building a support infrastructure; (3) Encouraging family involvement; (4) Developing family-friendly communication; (5) Supporting family involvement at home; (6) Supporting educational opportunities for families; (7) Creating family-school-community partnerships and (8) Preparing educators to work with families. Additionally, an index of family involvement practices is included for each strategy as well as resources for evaluating the effectiveness of family involvement activities. A sample school calendar of family involvement activities, a bibliography, and a list of contacts for additional information and references are also included. It is noted that not all the strategies included will work for every school. To be most effective, school administrators and teachers, in consultation with parents and community representatives, should select strategies based upon each individual school's needs, priorities, resources, student population, and community support.
