Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence
Schools, agencies and individuals seeking to implement a violence prevention program have many options from which to choose--they also have a responsibility to choose wisely. This program guide has been developed to assist Safe Communities--Safe Schools (SCSS) sites, as well as other organizations and individuals interested in selecting and implementing effective violence prevention programs and strategies. The guide is designed to be a resource that enhances understanding about what constitutes an effective program, what needs must be addressed, and what effective programs will meet those needs. The document also includes a listing of programs and the goals, objectives, and targets of each program. This information will provide organizations with the ability to make informed decisions about choosing a prevention program suitable for their needs. Topics include: (1) Effective Program Planning; (2) Selecting a Program; (3) Implementing a Program; and (4) Evaluating a Program. Two appendixes present: (1) Program Matrix; and (2) Blueprints Program Descriptions (Model Programs). [Contributing author of this content was Michelle Beaulieu Cooke. Support was also provided by the Colorado Department of Public Safety, Division of Criminal Justice. This document represents the second printing of the 2002 edition of this content.]
