It Takes a Team: A Profile of Support Staff in American Education
American Federation of Teachers
While teachers and school administrators play a highly visible role in education, other school team members work behind the scenes: food service workers, school nurses, school security, custodians, maintenance workers, classroom instructional assistants, bus drivers, secretaries and office employees. In the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), these team members are called paraprofessionals and school-related personnel (PSRPs). This report is a compilation of information about PSRPs that sketches a beginning portrait of these employees, their working conditions, and their concerns. Part One includes information about salaries, hours and benefits. Part Two discusses the role of PSRPs in the AFT and the four major areas in which the group has focused efforts: (1) Standards, certification/licensure and professional development; (2) Privatization; (3) Workloads and staffing; and (4) Health and safety. The report concludes that job prospects for PSRPs continue to look promising; according to Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth in the field is projected through 2008. A timeline of federal initiatives affecting PSRPs is included. (Contains 17 endnotes and 8 tables.)
